LIVE ONLINE AUTHOR VISIT PROGRAM
FAQ

WHAT IS LIVE STREAMING VIDEO?
Live streaming video is a process that allows live television style broadcasts over the internet. By linking computers through a broadband internet connection, video streaming makes it possible for me to broadcast live from my studio in New Hampshire to your classroom anywhere around the world.

CAN THE STUDENTS TALK WITH THE AUTHOR?
You Bet!    I'll speak live over the internet monitor and the class can talk directly with me just using a regular phone line. It's like live television!

WHY DO YOU NEED A TELEPHONE?
Live streaming video is a one way broadcast. A regular phone line makes this a two way conversation. It would require special equipment to use VOIP ("internet phone service") and the regular phone line does the job just as well. On top of that, I will pay the long distance phone charges.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LIVE VIDEO STREAM AND A WEBCAST?
The term "webcast" implies a low grade video conference with just a talking head on screen. This is nothing like that. With my digital TV studio, I'm producing an author visit program unlike any in-school visit around. Watch the
sample visits to see how I will take your students a billion years in the future, to the bottom of the ocean or anywhere the imagination of storytelling allows. The class can join in and help shape the adventure.
You can look at all my videos on the download page.

MOST VIDEO DOWNLOADS ARE TINY, HOW WILL THE CLASS SEE?
True, most online videos are small in size so that they will download faster. However, live streaming is a different animal because it's sending the signal to your school but not copying onto your hard drive. That allows me to send a full screen and high definition signal. If you have a really large group of students, I'd suggest more than one computer so the class can split up and participate on different screens.

WHY CHOOSE AN ONLINE EVENT INSTEAD OF AN IN-SCHOOL VISIT?
A live author visit in the school is a great opportunity to meet face to face with students. However, after watching my different grade level
sample visits you can see how different this is from an in-school visit. While still meeting an author, I can reach out to your class in ways that a traditional visit can't.

Here are some further differences to consider:
  • With travel and accomodation expenses, an in-school author visit can be cost prohibitive.
  • An in-school visit has to be scheduled a long time in advance whereas an online visit could be arranged on shorter notice and easily rescheduled if there are problems.
  • The visual resources available in my online studio will make this a rich and exciting experience that a visiting author can't offer.
  • With students looking to the internet for career choices, I can introduce them to new possibilities as future writers, animators, and even broadcasters.
  • I'm just as live during this visit and can talk with and interact with students as well as any visiting author.
  • I can design and create a visit with your class to fit your particular curriculum.
            This could include:
  • working one on one with writing students or a young writer's workshop.
  • gearing the event to a specific topics such as YA fiction, animation & writing, turning journal writing into stories.
  • developing a program for a range of classroom ages.
  • readings from my books and upcoming works.
  • author Q and A.
  • or any combinations of things to suit your classroom curriculum. Find out more about creating a unique program on the design a visit page.

  • WHAT TECHNICAL THINGS DO TEACHERS NEED TO DO TO SET UP A VISIT?
Simple as 1-2-3. All you'll need is:
  • Broadband internet connection (CABLE or DSL)
  • A classroom setting with an internet feed.
  • An available telephone for the students and teacher to talk with me. A cell phone or cordless will do fine.
  • A free version of the Windows Media Player® which is already pre-installed on all Windows computers. I can help test to see if you have the best version.
  • It's That Easy
At the scheduled time of the visit, the class should be ready with the computer monitor at the front of the room and logged on to
www.johnlunn.com. I'll call to connect the phone line and you can click the class visit button at the top of the page. The media player window will open and you'll see me live in my studio, ready to work with your class.

    WHAT DOES IT COST?
The basic hour visit is $250.00 USD. There would be additional charges if you want to have a custom visit designed for your class. Find out more on the
    design a visit page.

  • Remember! There are no travel or accomodation expenses connected with these visit.
  • After the visit is over, you're school will get a DVD of your class visit with me that you can use with other classes or just for posterity. At no charge!
